Detroit Council Moves to Impeach Mayor Kilpatrick

Tuesday, May 13, 2008

DETROIT —  By a 5-4 vote, the Detroit City Council on Tuesday approved a resolution to start the impeachment process of embattled Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick.

It also approved a separate resolution to ask Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm to expel the mayor.

The council is going down this dual-track path, in case one method doesn't work.

Kilpatrick has been indicted in connection with a text-message sex scandal and his handling of police whistleblower lawsuits, which ended in an $8.4 million settlement last Fall.
