Rich writes that Congress isn't the body college athletics needs to deal with NIL.
College athletics are under siege and this time, fans may have no one to blame but themselves if they continue to push Congress to regulate their favorite sport.

There are few people in the world with less patience than a sports fan. We want our teams to win and win now. Bad clock management at the end of a game? "The coach should have been fired a week ago!" Hire a big-name coach to replace him? "It’s championship or bust!" (As a fan and alumni of the Colorado Buffaloes, I know this fan reaction too well). Trade your star player in the twilight of his career for an unproven rookie with long-term upside? "I can’t believe they are going to make me pay to watch this team. They should pay me to babysit, instead!"

Admit it. We’re all guilty of exaggerated and unrealistic expectations when it comes to sports. Coaches are often carried off the field and placed directly on the hot seat. We’re buying our favorite player’s jersey one day and demanding he be traded the next. When things aren’t going in the right direction, we demand immediate change.

CLICK HERE FOR MORE SPORTS COVERAGE ON FOXNEWS.COM

While the immediacy of the fan experience is part of what makes sports so engaging, it can also come as a detriment. Ask Cleveland Browns fans about the early 1990s when both Bill Belichick and Nick Saban were walking their sidelines. By 1995, Saban had gone back to the college ranks to coach Michigan State and within a year, the team fired Belichick who would go straight to New England where he’d eventually win a record 6 championships as a head coach.

Who can blame fans, then, for reacting the way they have to the total shift occurring in college sports, and in particular college football. The elimination of amateurism in college sports where players can now be compensated for the use of their Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) has sent fans into a tizzy.

Overnight, teams' most recognizable players began using the transfer portal like free agency, leaving their schools for programs with more money and bigger audiences. Schools created "NIL Collectives" where fans could donate to a fund that would pay a player to transfer to their school and the fan would even get a tax benefit in the process. Almost immediately, fans of programs with fewer resources called foul, believing their ability to compete was now significantly limited.

Coaches also reacted, with some embracing the new rules more than others. A handful, including defending champion Jim Harbaugh, left for NFL jobs; while others quit, like the aforementioned Saban who simply retired, nearly 30 years after leaving the Browns for the cold turf of East Lansing, Michigan.

Fans, reacting with typical impatience, demanded action. To many, their beloved sport had been ruined by greed and lack of regulation and it had to be rectified. The question for most was how?

GEORGIA'S KIRBY SMART SOUNDS ALARM ON HOW NIL AFFECTS RECRUITING

The most obvious answer would seem to be better rules set by the NCAA. But ask any college sports fan how much they trust the NCAA and many would tell you they’d rather leave their child with Ja Morant at a strip club.

After all, the National Collegiate Athletic Association hasn’t shown the best judgment over the years when it comes to the welfare of student-athletes, particularly when it comes to player compensation. Just ask Ed O’Bannon, Jeremy Bloom, or Maurice Clarrett. How can anyone trust an organization who regularly faces off with their own players in the United States Supreme Court? Or worse, an organization that can’t distinguish between who should properly participate in men’s and women’s sports.

Seeking an immediate solution, fans turned to the United States Congress, pleading with their representatives to get involved and create regulations. Predictably, they didn’t hesitate. By the summer of 2023, dozens of bills had been introduced in various legislative committees and four even made it to the floor for debate, though in typical congressional fashion, nothing passed.

This week, however, those wanting congressional action were revitalized as Coach Saban accepted an invite to Washington by Senator Ted Cruz. College football’s most distinguished coach has never been shy about his desire for greater regulation in the sport, telling Pat McAfee last December, "This system that we have right now doesn't have any guardrails and in most competitive venues there are guardrails."

All due respect to Saban’s coaching accomplishments, but his legislative instincts fall far short of those on the gridiron. What makes Saban, or anyone else, think that Congress can successfully fix college sports, or that it even needs to be fixed?

This is the same legislative body who has identified societal problems like poverty, homelessness, and drug addiction, thrown tens of trillions of dollars at the problem, and only made them worse. The same Congress who has managed to run up a national debt of more than $31 trillion dollars that includes insolvent healthcare and social security programs. The same legislators who have protected the monopolies of professional sports leagues at the expense of players and fans alike. Congress has proven time and time again to be incapable of fixing anything they put their hands on, more often making them worse.

And if Congress does take action, the inevitable result will undoubtedly be a union of college athletes that will help the politicians more than the players. How so? If Congress has legislative control of the sport and college athletes are therefore reliant on Congress to create rules in their favor, wouldn’t it follow that the union will make political donations to the congressmen most willing to help them? Whose incentives are we focused on?

The reality is that free markets do work, and given time, the sport will start to regulate itself. Admittedly, the existing rules of paying players strictly for their Name, Image, and Likeness can be better enforced, requiring proof of an exchange of value—the payer was paid a certain amount in exchange for a specific business using their Name with profit in mind. Such enforcement will correct the bribery of the NIL collectives. Beyond that, the best thing fans can do is keep Congress out of collegiate sports and instead, try exercising a little patience.
f0d1eb76-9064-5a12-a7ad-96a9d846d3e0 fnc Fox News fox-news/sports/ncaa fox-news/sports/ncaa-fb fox-news/sports/ncaa-bk fox-news/sports article Tue, 19 Mar 2024 06:35:35 -0400 https://www.foxnews.com/politics/trump-immense-gop-clout-on-the-line-contentious-republican-primary-crucial-senate-battleground https://www.foxnews.com/politics/trump-immense-gop-clout-on-the-line-contentious-republican-primary-crucial-senate-battleground Trump's immense GOP clout on the line in contentious Republican primary in crucial Senate battleground Former President Trump's GOP clout is on the line in Tuesday's Republican Senate primary in Ohio, in the race to face off in November against vulnerable Democrat Sen. Sherrod Brown in November.

The third major candidate in the race is Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose.

Trump, meanwhile, is aiming for a repeat performance in Ohio.

Two years ago, the former president backed Vance in a crowded and combative Republican Senate nomination race, boosting him to victory in the 2022 primary a couple of weeks later.

OHIO REPUBLICAN US SENATE CANDIDATE BERNIE MORENO HAS SPECIAL MESSAGE FOR GOP MEMBERS WHO 'DON'T LIKE' TRUMP

Fast-forward to the present, and Trump – who last week clinched the Republican nomination and is now the GOP's presumptive presidential nominee – returned to Ohio on Saturday as he aimed to boost Moreno. Vance and another top Trump ally, Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio, also spoke at the rally outside of Dayton.

The event was announced hours after Dolan – a former top county prosecutor and Ohio assistant attorney general whose family owns Major League Baseball's Cleveland Guardians – was endorsed by DeWine. Days earlier, Dolan landed the backing of former Sen. Rob Portman. DeWine and Portman are considered top members of Ohio's Republican old guard or establishment.

"President Trump, Jim Jordan, and JD Vance's view of the party, which is who's endorsed me or do you want to go back to the Bush, Cheney, Mitt Romney vision of the party?" Moreno told Fox News Digital at a campaign event in Milford, Ohio, on Sunday night. "That's the question. A vote for Dolan is a vote for 1980s Republicans that we thought were extinct, but unfortunately they haven't. But on Tuesday, we'll make it finally extinct here in Ohio."

Moreno, an immigrant who arrived in the U.S. legally from Colombia and became a successful Cleveland-based businessman and luxury auto dealership giant, was endorsed by Trump in December.

"We're going to have President Trump in the White House, that's for certain," Moreno predicted. "But what we need is strong fighters in the Senate to make sure we get the [Trump America First] agenda implemented."

Dolan, along with Moreno, is making his second straight bid for the Senate in Ohio. Additionally, Dolan, who is the only one of the three major candidates not to seek Trump's endorsement, has highlighted that he is a supporter of Trump's policies but not the former president's personality.

"I’m the only one in this race that’s cut taxes and reduced regulations. Who else has done that? Donald Trump," Dolan highlighted in a Fox News Digital interview in Columbus on Monday. "Everyone wants to talk about Donald Trump’s endorsement. I’m the only one who’s actually done Donald Trump policies because it helps Ohio."

"Bernie wants to be divisive. I want to be inclusive of all Republicans," Dolan claimed. "I’m not interested in dividing the Republican Party. I’m interested in when we put conservative agendas in place, Republicans win. When that happens, Ohioans and Americans are better off. That’s the message I’m running on."

Millions have been spent by the campaigns and aligned super PACs – mostly on behalf of Dolan and Moreno – to flood the airwaves with negative attack ads.

LaRose has criticized both of his wealthier rivals, but he has not had the financial firepower to keep pace with Dolan and Moreno.

"I'm the one that Sherrod is the most afraid of. It's pretty clear and the old saying is they only try to tackle you when you have the ball," LaRose claimed in a recent Fox News Digital interview. "The Democrats have been attacking me because they know I'm the most dangerous weapon against Sherrod Brown."

In the closing stretch, Democrats started meddling in the Ohio GOP primary.

Duty and Country PAC, which is funded by Senate Majority PAC, the top super PAC supporting Senate Democrats, dished out nearly $3 million in the final days ahead of the primary to run ads boosting Moreno, whom they view as the weakest general election nominee.

There was another major development in the primary race last week, as The Associated Press published a report claiming that an adult hookup website account was created in 2008 using an email linked to Moreno.

Pushing back against the report, Moreno called it "a sick, last-minute attack by desperate people."

The winner of the GOP primary will face off in November against Brown, who is the only Democrat to win statewide in Ohio over the past decade. Brown is being heavily targeted by Republicans in a state that was once a premiere battleground before shifting red.

Democrats control the U.S. Senate with a 51-49 majority, but Republicans are looking at a favorable Senate map in 2024, with Democrats defending 23 of the 34 seats up for grabs. Three of those seats are in red states that Trump carried in 2020 — Ohio, Montana and West Virginia, where Democrat Sen. Joe Manchin is not running for re-election.

As Trump locks up the GOP presidential nomination, he is once again exerting increasing control over the Republican Party, and the Ohio primary is seen as a test of his immense clout.

"Donald Trump is the most important endorsement in Ohio, bar none," longtime Republican strategist and 2016 Trump campaign veteran Mike Biundo emphasized.

Biundo, who has worked on multiple campaigns in Ohio, told Fox News that "Trump moves numbers and helps to hand victories to those he endorses. It’s just a fact. Just look at Senator JD Vance. He owes his seat to the last minute Trump endorsement."

An Ohio-based Republican consultant, who asked to remain anonymous to speak more freely, called the Republican primary "a litmus test" of Trump's sway over the GOP.

"The real question is whether President Trump's endorsement still carries weight with Republican primary voters in Ohio," the consultant said. "It's that simple and straight forward and I think ultimately the answer is yes."

The showdown in Ohio is one of the few major down-ballot GOP primaries where the Trump-backed candidate is at risk of losing.

"Trump's got a lot invested in Bernie Moreno," veteran Republican strategist Matt Gorman said.

And longtime Ohio-based GOP consultant Mike Hartley, who remains neutral in this year's primary, told Fox News "it's important to Trump, evidenced by the fact that he came into the state, just like he did for JD Vance."

Fox News' Deirdre Heavey and Jamie Vera contributed to this report.

Get the latest updates from the 2024 campaign trail, exclusive interviews and more at our Fox News Digital election hub.
197114e8-da2f-5f32-bc97-e06bad37dc50 fnc Fox News fox-news/politics fox-news/politics/senate fox-news/politics/elections fox-news/politics/elections/republicans fox-news/us/us-regions/midwest/ohio fox-news/person/donald-trump fox-news/person/jd-vance fox-news/person/mike-dewine fox-news/politics article Tue, 19 Mar 2024 06:34:52 -0400 https://www.foxnews.com/us/california-defendant-trial-murder-allegedly-stabs-his-attorney-pen-charges-toward-prosecutor https://www.foxnews.com/us/california-defendant-trial-murder-allegedly-stabs-his-attorney-pen-charges-toward-prosecutor California defendant on trial for murder allegedly stabs his attorney with pen, charges toward prosecutor Two attorneys were injured in a California courtroom after a man on trial for murder allegedly used a pen to stab his own defense lawyer before attacking the prosecutor.
Two attorneys were injured on Monday in a Martinez, California, courtroom after a man on trial for murder allegedly used a pen to stab his own defense lawyer before subsequently charging the prosecutor.

Ramello Randle, 28, allegedly broke or cut through a restraint device keeping him in a courtroom chair before he used his lawyer's pen to stab the lawyer in his face and head, according to the East Bay Times. The case was days away from concluding when Randle shouted expletives at Bell during the cross-examination of Randle's mother, a defense witness. One of the main challenges is connecting existing trails.
When Mike O’Neil opened his bicycle repair shop in Muncie, Indiana, the Cardinal Greenway trail just outside its window stretched only 2 miles south of the shop.

Today, it extends 33 miles beyond that, but the ultimate vision is far grander.

O'Neil hopes the trail born from eastern Indiana's old railroad tracks will eventually become a central cog in the proposed Great American Rail-Trail — a continuous network of walking and biking routes spanning from Washington state to Washington, D.C.

TENNESSEE PARK UNVEILS NEW WALKING TRAIL MADE OF OLD, RECYCLED TIRES

"As the trail gets longer, more and more people use it," said O’Neil, who has completed five coast-to-coast bike trips and usually comps the repair costs for out-of-state cyclists visiting his Greenway 500 Bike Shop, which he's owned for nearly two decades. "It would be a wonderful blessing to have it all connected."

The Biden administration was set to open applications Tuesday for a new grant program that for the first time prioritizes not just building trails but connecting the existing ones. The 2021 bipartisan infrastructure law allowed for as much as $1 billion over five years for the program, but Congress has authorized less than $45 million so far.

AMERICA'S TOP 5 HIKING CITIES, ACCORDING TO A NEW ANALYSIS

Still, trail activists say the commitment is almost as important as the dollar figure.

"The number is not as big as we want it to be, but the fact it’s happening is huge," said Brandi Horton from the Rails to Trails Conservancy. "The administration is understanding in a way we’ve never seen before the role that active transportation has in helping people get around the places where they live."

Federal Highway Administrator Shailen Bhatt said active transportation options provide health benefits and are as important as electric vehicles in limiting greenhouse gas emissions. He recalled biking along trails on the East Coast when he was Delaware's transportation director and seeing some of the unsafe gaps in the system.

"Unless we have these networks fully developed, many people won't be able to take advantage of it," Bhatt said.

Officials are expecting a highly competitive grant process, including applications from many of the communities along the planned route of the 3,700-mile (5,966-kilometer) Great American Rail-Trail. While the ambitious project currently includes more than 125 completed trails across 12 states and the nation's capital, significant gaps remain — particularly in rural Western states such as Montana and Wyoming.

Michael Kusiek, executive director of the active transportation advocacy group Wyoming Pathways, said reliable trails are especially important for states with rugged terrain. Cyclists and backpackers will often skip routes that aren’t certified as safe, he said.

Although state and local governments in rural areas might not prioritize trails the way larger population centers do, Kusiek said the national effort has spurred competition.

"I think we’d like to not be the last ones showing up to cross the finish line," Kusiek said.

Wyoming's northern neighbor of Montana was awarded a $24 million federal grant last week to extend a recreational trail that had been cut off by a highway and overpass.

Another Montana segment of the Great American Rail-Trail passes by the 50,000 Silver Dollar Inn in Haugan. Brooke Lincoln, who owns the motel and other businesses nearby, said linking the trails to a national network could be a huge benefit to numerous small towns.

"We're very depressed," Lincoln said. "We have very little private property. Our timber industry is basically gone, so our economy is becoming more and more recreation-based. The more diverse that base is, the better it's going to be."

Amanda Cooley, one of the leaders of an initiative to close western Montana's trail gaps, said residents often don't understand the importance of such projects until they're complete.

"When you go to a place like Deer Lodge, Montana, people still wave at you at the stop light," Cooley said. "The pace of life is just a little slower. When you’re a pedestrian or on a bike, it allows you to experience more. It allows you to take more in instead of just flying by."

Railroad tracks established most of the key arteries for the Great American Rail-Trail, but many of the proposed connectors present unique challenges. For example, Ohio and West Virginia have made progress toward completing their trail networks, but the Ohio River separating them is a potentially costly obstacle for both states.

A stand-alone recreational bridge connecting Steubenville, Ohio, and East Steubenville, West Virginia, could cost upwards of $35 million, said Mike Paprocki, executive director of the BHJ Metropolitan Planning Commission, which has studied the project. Officials instead are seeking federal funding for a $160 million multimodal bridge for motorized vehicle traffic, with a separate segment for pedestrians and cyclists alongside it.

"Without the infrastructure bill, we wouldn't be having these conversations," Paprocki said. "We'd be fighting tooth and nail to get money and would probably be left off the food troth."

Some of the efforts to expand trails over former railroad tracks have also been complicated due to legal action. Lindsay Brinton, an attorney for St. Louis-based Lewis Rice, said trails can devalue property and she's trying to make sure the landowners she represents are justly compensated under the laws that protect their rights.

TRAFFIC IS NOW THE WORST IN THESE 5 U.S. CITIES — IS YOURS HERE?

"People are frustrated and disappointed," Brinton said. "I have lots of clients who live in rural Indiana who say, ‘We don’t want a trail here.’ But that can't even be factored into the analysis. Nobody cares what the landowners want."

Indiana's Cardinal Greenway trail stretches 62 miles between Marion and Richmond with a several-mile gap in the middle. In many ways, it represents both the future of active transportation and its roots in rail travel. In fact, the nonprofit organization that manages the trail operates out of a former train depot.

O'Neil, 57, remains optimistic that eventually the trail passing by his bike shop and stopping just short of the Ohio border will carry cyclists into that state and then all the way to the East Coast. How quickly that will happen, however, is dependent on finding much larger pots of money to fill the gaps.

"We're oh so close," he said.
88a5358d-540e-5d2d-8def-a7c814452d3e fnc Fox News fox-news/sports/running fox-news/topic/associated-press fox-news/great-outdoors fox-news/health/nutrition-and-fitness/fitness fox-news/lifestyle fox-news/us article Tue, 19 Mar 2024 06:29:30 -0400 https://www.foxnews.com/sports/steve-tensi-former-broncos-chargers-quarterback-dead https://www.foxnews.com/sports/steve-tensi-former-broncos-chargers-quarterback-dead Steve Tensi, former Broncos and Chargers quarterback, dead at 81 Steve Tensi, a former starting quarterback with the Denver Broncos, died last week, the team announced on Monday. Looking through a wedding photographer's gallery can help you get a good idea of the person's shooting style.

When searching for a photographer to shoot your wedding, it's vital that everyone is on the same page. During the booking process, just as you will have questions for your potential photographer, this person will likely have questions for you, too.

"As much as it's important for the client to interview the photographer, it's just as important for the photographer to also interview the client," Kristin Piteo, a U.S. and Europe-based wedding photographer told Fox News Digital.

"I think in the booking process, it's important to make sure that you're aligned with the same vision of approach, artistic views and overall essence of the day."

A GUIDE TO FINDING THE PERFECT WEDDING VENUE FOR YOUR BIG DAY

Many wedding photographers have questionnaires for potential clients to fill out prior to their first call. This is to make sure the client and couple are a potential good fit for each other before getting too deep into the booking process.

Piteo shared that some questions asked on her questionnaire are the date, venue, wedding investment, whether the couple has a wedding planner, plus mood and inspiration.

Piteo also noted that couples should ask potential photographers to see their galleries and about their experience in the field.

Your wedding photographer is going to be part of one of the most important days of your life. They are going to be there for all the moments, big and small, that are part of your wedding day.

As a couple, you'll want to feel comfortable with your photographer in order to get authentic, beautiful photos. Piteo spoke about the importance of building a relationship with her clients before the big day.

"I find that my work is really inspirational to my clients because I have a way of creating a space of comfortability and allowing my clients to be vulnerable," Piteo said.

"I show up on the day, and I want to make sure that I feel like a friend, I feel like somebody you've known for a long time, and I do this because the intention behind my photos is to have a feeling and to embody the essence and the personalities of my couples."

"The reason I'm able to do that is from inception of booking, I make sure that I build a relationship with them, whether that be via social media, phone calls or texting. I try to be an aid to them in the process and through being that person to them, we obviously end up developing some sort of deep friendship outside just being their photographer," Piteo continued.

There is a client for every photographer and a photographer for every client, according to Piteo. Finding that perfect partnership can be tricky.

This all begins with combing through photographers' galleries and wedding websites to find work that speaks to you and your partner.

CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR OUR LIFESTYLE NEWSLETTER

"I think when couples are looking for a photographer, really go with what your intuition is telling you. … If you feel something from the images, then that should mean a lot. Go ahead and book a call and see what that looks like," Piteo noted.

"That's my biggest advice. Just make sure that whoever you choose resonates with you because that is the person that's in charge of documenting one of the most important days of your life."

There's an abundance of stressors that can come up during a wedding day. Avoid letting these stressors overtake what the day is about. Don't lose sight of what you are celebrating.

"I think a huge mistake on the wedding day is not being present and letting the outside stressors of what's going on in the background affect the clarity of your wedding day," Piteo said.

"I've seen couples being taken away from the day."

If you feel yourself getting overwhelmed throughout the day, take a step back, a deep breath and focus in on the love you share with your partner.

This is an occasion you'll want to look back on as a day full of happiness and love, not stress and worry.

Unless you have requests for specific family photos or a very small detail that a photographer should know about, as long as you've hired someone you trust, an extensive shot list isn't necessary.

There are so many other things you need to plan for leading up to your big day. Take the shot list off your plate by letting your trust lie with the photographer.

"I don't particularly work off shot lists because it kind of takes me away from being in the moment on the wedding day. Unless there's something very in particular, like, 'Oh, I'm wearing my grandmother's ring, I want to make sure that I get a photo of me wearing my grandmother's ring,' something like that I want to be brought to my attention. Other than that, you chose your photographer because you trust them and you like their work and you've invested in them," said Piteo.

"I would say the only time a shot list would come into play is for anything that's out of the ordinary or family photos or something like that."

Your photographer is tasked with an enormous responsibility. Don't underestimate the importance of a photographer on your wedding day. Hire someone who is well-qualified to take on the task and will be able to artistically document your wedding day.

"I think a mistake that couples can make when looking for or booking a photographer is maybe not realizing the importance of what your photographer is capable of," Piteo said.

"I've seen it before, where couples say, 'Oh, we're just going to go with a family friend route' or 'We're going to go through this or that' — and they're not really understanding the level of importance of what the documentation of their wedding day means. I think that that could be a mistake."

Don't make the mistake of waiting until the last minute to get your photographer booked. Getting a photographer locked in should be one of the first vendors you secure.

If you wait until closer to your wedding date to hire a photographer, your top choices will likely be booked already.

Piteo said that the wedding planner, venue and photographer are the three vendors you want to book first. She noted that she's seen couples book these three in different orders, but getting these locked in early is vital.

"It's very important because the wedding industry these days is very aggressive in the bookings. So, for example, 2024 is completely booked and 2025 is starting to fill up," Piteo said.

"So, if you want the vendors that align with you and that really inspire you, I would say that very early on in the wedding process, you should start looking at who you want to book for those."

For more Lifestyle articles, visit www.foxnews.com/lifestyle.
a9fea0f9-39cf-54ff-a1b4-5568439c9a69 fnc Fox News fox-news/lifestyle/weddings fox-news/entertainment/events/marriage fox-news/lifestyle/relationships fox-news/lifestyle fox-news/lifestyle/occasions fox-news/special/occasions fox-news/lifestyle article Tue, 19 Mar 2024 06:00:25 -0400 https://www.foxnews.com/media/brooklyn-residents-protest-proposed-men-only-homeless-shelter-neighborhood-going-war https://www.foxnews.com/media/brooklyn-residents-protest-proposed-men-only-homeless-shelter-neighborhood-going-war Brooklyn residents protest proposed men-only homeless shelter in their neighborhood: ‘It’s going to be a war’ Protesters unified in the streets of Brooklyn to protest the city-proposed establishment of a men-only homeless shelter in a residential neighborhood.
Hundreds flooded the streets of a Brooklyn neighborhood this weekend to protest the establishment of a men-only homeless shelter.

Residents, politicians and local business owners of the neighborhood of Bensonhurst united in protest Saturday against the creation of the shelter that is expected to hold 150 homeless men, including those with mental health challenges.

Marie Brullo, a Bensonhurst resident for the past 58 years, told local affiliate FOX 5, "It's just going to cause more problems than we already have. https://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/family-affair-child-star-turns-god-surviving-drug-addiction-alcoholism 'Family Affair' child star turns to God after surviving drug addiction, alcoholism Former child star Johnny Whitaker starred as Jonathan "Jody" Patterson-Davis in "Family Affair," which aired from 1966 until 1971. It also starred Anissa Jones as Buffy.
For the past 20 years, Johnny Whitaker has been conducting 12-step meetings at a local county jail – and the actor calls it a blessing.

"Once a month, I go in to share my experience, as well as offer strength and hope," the 64-year-old told Fox News Digital. "I do it through my ministry. I want to tell these guys that there is hope. They can get clean and sober. They can get out of the revolving door that they find themselves in."

The former child star skyrocketed to fame in the sitcom "Family Affair," which aired from 1966 until 1971. The series is now available for streaming on The Sid and Marty Krofft Channel. The producing pair were known for their imaginative children’s programming.

'LAND OF THE LOST' CHILD STAR LIVED 'YELLOWSTONE' LIFE AFTER HOLLYWOOD FAME

"Johnny was already famous when he became part of the Sid and Marty Krofft family," Marty’s daughter, Deanna Krofft Pope, told Fox News Digital. "He was not only great in the role of Johnny Stuart in the original ‘Sigmund and the Sea Monsters,’ but when he returned in a cameo in our reboot, he was so good that we ended up writing him in for reoccurring appearances. And, of course, the fans loved it."

"Family Affair" centered on a swinging bachelor (Brian Keith) who is given custody of his late brother’s three children. Whitaker said he still has fond memories of bringing the series to life.

"It was always fun," he shared. "We were always coddled and cared for by Brian, along with the producers and directors. They took care of us. It was an adventure… It, unfortunately, ended because CBS had a change in management. That management wanted to get rid of the old shows and make way for new shows. Brian had also indicated at one point that he wanted out. He was ready for something new. We were still in the top 10 when we went out. But what better way to go than to be on top?"

But life wasn’t always kind to the show’s co-stars. Jones, who played Buffy, died of a drug overdose in 1976. She was 18.

"My agent claims that she was kind of out of it when she last saw her, possibly high or very depressed," Whitaker alleged. "I remember my agent said, ‘You need to contact her. She looks really bad.’ I did my best, but I was a young teen and getting ready for a new family variety show. I did try to contact her. Even after her passing, I tried to contact her family. And then her brother died a few years later from an overdose."

"She was my sister," Whitaker reflected. "I grew up in The Church of Jesus Christ of Ladder-day Saints, commonly known as the Mormon faith. I understand that this life, our existence, is a very short one. But it was still difficult to lose her so young."

CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP FOR THE ENTERTAINMENT NEWSLETTER

Whitaker is one of eight children. Growing up, he described having a "normal’" childhood, one where everyone was required to do chores at home, including him. Over the years, he kept busy making appearances on hit TV shows like "Bonanza," "Bewitched" and "Gunsmoke," among others. But at age 16, he found himself attending parties in Hollywood where he was exposed to drugs and alcohol. It didn’t take long for him to use – and it quickly took over his life.

"I had a family intervention," he recalled. "It was extremely embarrassing, and I was very upset. I signed this contract my brother gave me, but I didn’t stop. When you’re an addict, you don’t like to admit there’s a problem. You're not just going to suddenly stop. But I believe that every addict and alcoholic knows that they have a problem."

It wouldn’t be until 12 days later that Whitaker had "an a-ha moment, a God shot." The drugs no longer had the same effect he was yearning for. And on Sept. 25, 1997, he decided to finally get help. His faith in God also gave him a newfound purpose to get sober, he said.

"I had to make that decision on my own," he said. "… To have a successful childhood, you need to choose the right peers… Most of my peers were 20, 25, 30 years older than me. My peers were chosen for me… And when you’re in an environment where drinking and using drugs is acceptable, it becomes acceptable to you. You don’t think there’s anything wrong with using and drinking. When I was drinking, I could drink almost anybody under the table without getting too crazy… And to some extent, I didn’t always fit in. Those were just some of the reasons that I became an addict, an alcoholic. I wanted to fit in."

Whitaker said he resorted to drinking after his marriage ended in 1988. He described his divorce and the events that occurred afterward as "traumatic."

"I had a girlfriend who got pregnant after my divorce," he explained. "She already had a child before I met her… But when she became pregnant with my child, it was too much on her. She chose to take her life, along with my child’s. That was a traumatic experience for me, my divorce and then losing my girlfriend and child. That made it easy for me to choose drugs and alcohol."

Today, Whitaker said he’s found peace through sobriety and faith. And through his ministry, he’s able to encourage other inmates to turn their lives around as a drug and alcohol counselor. He previously served as a missionary in Portugal from 1979 to 1981.

"I’m not planning to fully retire," he chuckled. "I’m working on my memoirs and hoping to get that out at the end of the year. I was making four Walt Disney movies in 1971. A peer of mine… told me, ‘Disney is giving away stock options.’ I had no idea what a stock option was, but I proceeded to tell my mom and dad. I said, ‘Why don’t we take half of the money that I get from the next Disney film and put it into Disney stock? Disney could then pay us back that same amount? Other operations, many of them left-leaning, cherry-picked quotes to make Trump look as awful as possible, while ignoring the reasonable-sounding things he said.

A classic example was when I asked the former president about the murder of Alexei Navalny in a Siberian prison camp. I thought he might duck because of his friendly relationship with Vladimir Putin.

But I put it to him point-blank: Is the Russian dictator responsible for the death of the opposition leader?

TRUMP: IF YOU’RE GOING TO BAN TIKTOK, BAN FACEBOOK TOO

"Perhaps," Trump said. "I mean, possibly, I could say probably. I don't know. He's a young man, so statistically he'd be alive for a long time…Certainly that would look like something very bad happened."

Keep in mind that Trump has never even mentioned Putin in the same paragraph as Navalny, and now he’s saying "probably" responsible. Of course, Trump can’t prove it, and neither can I.

Here are some of the headlines:

"Trump Couldn’t Bring Himself to Condemn Putin for Alexei Navalny’s Death."

"Trump Delivers Head-Spinningly Awkward Answer to New Question About Putin."

"Trump: ‘I Don’t Know’ If Putin Was Responsible for Navalny’s Death."

You get the idea.

Which brings us to Trump’s rhetoric. I asked why he uses words like "vermin" and "poisoning of the blood" to describe illegal migrants – especially since the press says such language was used by Hitler and Mussolini.

Trump says he didn’t know that and then repeated "our country is being poisoned" – prompting a wave of headlines that he had doubled down on such harmful language.

TRUMP: BIDEN IS ‘BAD FOR ISRAEL’

I guess you could say that – and I’m not letting him off the hook – but the more telling part of his answer came next.

I asked the 45th president whether he uses "over the top" and "inflammatory" language to drive the media debate, meaning a focus on his words gets news outlets spending days on his turf, on his preferred issue, in the arguments over whether he went too far. And Trump didn’t deny it, saying he wouldn’t limit himself to "politically correct" verbiage.

"It also gets people thinking about very important issues," he said. "That if you don't use certain rhetoric, if you don't use certain words that maybe are not very nice words, nothing will happen." My theory, based on decades of observing him, was correct.

Then he went off on migrants coming from insane asylums and how crime will double – neither of which has been shown to be true on a major scale.

The same was true with NATO, when Trump caused a global uproar by saying he’d encourage the Russians to "do whatever the hell they want" to NATO countries that don’t pay their fair share of defense costs.

That sounds like someone taking a pro-Putin stance, I said.

"It sounds like somebody that wants to get people to pay money," Trump said. In other words, it was a negotiating tactic.

Half an hour before airtime, the media were awash in headlines about Trump saying there would be a "bloodbath" if he lost the election. So I watched that portion of his speech at an Ohio rally the night before.

There have been times when Trump used loaded words to signal the possibility of political violence. This wasn’t one of them.

TRUMP: I’LL DEBATE BIDEN ‘ANYTIME, ANYPLACE’

Trump was going on about Chinese cars and their impact on the American auto industry. Then he said if he wasn’t elected there would be a bloodbath – in terms of the impact on jobs. Then he went right back to talking about electric vehicles and industry competition.

Now some pundits said the mere use of the word bloodbath was like a bat signal, telling his supporters to get ready for violence. After all, he was so Machiavellian that he added, "That’s going to be the least of it." But as I said, too many outlets were so in love with the bloodbath story that they wrenched it out of context.

Trump also said at the rally that some migrants were "animals" and "not people." That’s unacceptable language, in my view, but remember what he said about inflammatory words driving the media debate. I wanted to decode his approach for viewers.

Trump also made news on abortion. I asked him about a Times story that said he is discussing with advisers a national ban after 16 weeks of pregnancy – not knowing his campaign had dismissed it as fake news – and figured he’d dismiss the story.

Nope. He essentially confirmed the 16-week story – saying he’d make a decision "pretty soon," which would obviously be in that range – that had previously been attributed to unnamed sources. He said, despite my skepticism, that he wants to "make both sides happy."

When Republicans grapple with abortion in the post-Roe world, Trump said, "you have to go with your heart. But beyond that, you also have to get elected." He said that opposing the three exceptions – rape, incest, life of the mother – caused Pennsylvania Republican Doug Mastriano to lose the governor’s race in a landslide.

Then Trump went off on the Democrats and late-term abortions – which I said in one of several fact-checks are exceedingly rare.

He also made news on subjects ranging from Israel to TikTok.

The first time I met Donald Trump was in 1987, in New York, when he was promoting his first book "The Art of the Deal."

And this, unprompted, is what he said to me:

"When I go up to New Hampshire – I'm not running for president, by the way – I got the best crowd, the best of everything in terms of reception. The politicians go up and get a moderate audience. I go up and they're scalping tickets. You heard that? They're scalping tickets. Why? What a glorious Monday. More like fun day. So, President Biden is wearing new sneakers that are designed to prevent him from falling. Here's the prototype. And this is exciting. They're also working on a shoe that will keep Kamala from talking. Meanwhile, the president is bracing for a huge national security threat as gangs flee a violent torn Haiti. Joe's already gathered a force to repel them. Just days ago, the president was seen confused and feeble as staffers ushered him inside as it began to rain during an event, saying it's hard enough to keep his pants dry when he's indoors. The country of Niger has announced an end to their military relationship with the United States.

Don't expect Biden to comment on the matter. His staff is terrified he'll mispronounce the name. Two-thirds of U.S. adults would rather skip the movie theaters and watch new flicks at home on streaming. That way, women can look at their phones throughout the movie and then force you to rewind it 13 times to find out what happened. You all do that. On Friday, Vice President Kamala Harris and rapper Fat Joe met to discuss easing marijuana penalties. Next up, she'll be discussing global warming with Vanilla Ice. According to a new study, woke people are more unhappy, anxious and depressed. Or it could be the reverse: unhappy, anxious and depressed people are more woke. Either way, they're ugly. Pet rocks, which were a fad in the 1970s, are making a comeback in South Korea. Like the classic toy, the rocks will be packaged in cardboard boxes but be called "The Biden." The CEO of Hertz has resigned following the company's bet on electric vehicles went bust. So, they're bringing in a new boss to slash prices.

PICTURE OF OJ SIMPSON

Old enough to remember that. A second man has been charged with the 2005 theft of a pair of ruby slippers Judy Garland wore in "The Wizard of Oz." And I'm thinking, come on, there has to be an easier way to tell your family you're gay. Reports allege that the tiny Arab state of Qatar apparently considered expelling Hamas leadership. No word yet whether Harvard will do the same thing. Sixty percent of likely voters oppose Biden's secretive flights that have transported 300,000 illegal immigrants across the nation. Some oppose it because it's cruel and unusual to make illegal immigrants fly United. A woman who identifies as a dog made headlines after appearing on an Australian radio show. That's nothing. In America, we have five dogs that identify as women on a TV show.

PICTURE OF THE LADIES ON THE VIEW

Terrible. How dare you applaud!

All right, to the monologue. Bad news, everyone. Jesse Watters is dead ...set against appearing on this show until his book is out. Which means... You've been hoaxed! Yes, it's time for "You've been hoaxed," where the reporting is as legit as the padding in Dylan Mulvaney's bra. It's the media's playbook written by their coaches on the left. First, they lie, then they attack you for saying it's a lie. Then they say it may be false, but it still fits a pattern of other lies they believe to be true. Which is how we got this weekend's bloodbath of a bloodbath. The media claimed Trump predicts a "bloodbath" if he loses. Of course, leaving out that Trump was referring to the automotive industry if Biden's policies continue. True, the media hit the context like a microphone I hide in a construction worker's porta-potty.

I told you that was a bad joke. Here's what Trump actually said.

DONALD TRUMP: Let me tell you something, to China, if you're listening, President Xi, and you and I are friends, but he understands the way I deal. Those big monster car manufacturing plants that you're building in Mexico right now, and you think you're going to get that, you're going to not hire Americans and you're going to sell the cars to us. Now, we're going to put a 100% tariff on every single car that comes across the line, and you're not going to be able to sell those guys if I get elected. Now, if I don't get elected, it's going to be a bloodbath for the whole... That's going to be the least of it. It's going to be a bloodbath for the country. That'll be the least of it.

CONSERVATIVES FUME THAT TRUMP'S ‘BLOODBATH’ COMMENT IS TAKEN OUT OF CONTEXT: ‘DECEPTIVE’ HEADLINES

"The least of it." So there you go. Clearly, Trump's "bloodbath" referred to the impact of Chinese and Mexican imports on our auto industry. Trump's not suggesting anyone will bathe in blood. Even Pelosi, who actually bathes in blood to keep her figure. But Trump's actual words make this New York Times headline about as accurate as Stevie Wonder playing cornhole. "Bloodbath," really? Once again, it's the media whores who pretend to misunderstand metaphors. Truth is, of course, it's just a deliberate hoax machine doing what it does best; taking something out of context, creating a story around it, and trusting their media pals to amplify it. And a whole host of other media hacks did while assuming you're too dumb to notice. Here's Nancy Pelosi at ground zero for hoaxes, CNN.

NANCY PELOSI: We just have to win this election because he's even predicting a bloodbath. What does that mean? He's going to exact a bloodbath? There's something wrong here. How respectful I am of the American people and their goodness but how much more do they have to see from him to understand that this isn't what our country is about?

That was scary. Thought I was watching the latest version of Faces of Death. Talk about hard-hitting questions. You rarely see that many softballs tossed outside of a lesbian barbecue. Hey, Dana, bat your eyes or something next time so we know that you're alive. But like most Trump hoaxes, this one stood up to scrutiny as well as Jesse's hair in a wind tunnel. He looks pretty good bald. So why is that? Well, we've changed. We've learned that the media cannot be trusted. We know to check their work since they won't do it themselves. It wasn't always this way. Remember the "fine people" hoax? Everyone fell for it, including Fox. But thanks to some of us and others outside this network who doggedly exposed that hoax and many others, Americans are now smarter and savvier about the hoax makers.

PELOSI SUGGESTS TRUMP MEANT HE WILL ‘EXACT A BLOODBATH’ IF HE DOESN'T WIN AFTER RALLY STATEMENTS

We suspect all stories like this and question them in search for context. This didn't used to happen. Now it does. And props to Elon Musk's X. Under the old regime, this would have been labeled fact before we even got out of bed. But now, with the full context out there, the hoaxers had to change track. It doesn't matter that it's out of context, we're told, Trump is capable of anything. Right. Which is Democrat for crap, let's cover our smelly a**es. No, you jerks, you were caught again. These people are like smash and grabbers who forget the getaway car and commit the crime, but are left holding the case of men and speed sticks. So now you see the media shift from it not being true to, but it's true in the context of the other hoaxes. True, the hoax is based on other hoaxes. For you to believe that Trump meant a literal bloodbath, you needed to believe in the fine people hoax, the Jussie Smollett hoax, the drinking bleach hoax, and so on. It's like saying you should believe in the Easter Bunny because there's the Tooth Fairy. But while we watch the hoax implode on impact, Dems are still protected in a hoax bubble. They're as immune to the truth as Hunter is to penicillin. But maybe it's Trump's own fault. I mean, he's so over the top. The Democrat media would never use a term like "bloodbath," would they?

MONTAGE OF THE MEDIA SAYING THE WORD "BLOODBATH": Politico.com reports tonight on the 'bloodbath' at the RNC. Joe Biden was just talking the other day about, you know, his concerns about a negative 'bloodbath.' And the headline refers to it as an impending 'bloodbath.' Elections may not be the 'bloodbath' for Democrats. This is probably going to be a 'bloodbath.' It would be a 'bloodbath.' 'Bloodbath' at the ballot box.

I think shrinks call that projection, which may be why you feel like projectile vomiting right now. So how do they think they can still get away with this? Are they that stupid, delusional, or just plain lazy? Please don't make us choose. The reason they're sweating harder than Judge Jeanine going through an airport metal detector is they know we're on to them. We're not falling for it anymore. The media's goal is not to provide information, it's to persuade and use whatever means necessary to get you to fall in line. So maybe the Dems' obsession with the single word "bloodbath" is legitimate because perhaps the polls are telling them there's one on the way.
9f842e68-90bd-5d66-b86d-89508403c244 fnc Fox News fox-news/media/fox-news-flash fox-news/media fox-news/shows/gutfeld fox-news/opinion article Mon, 18 Mar 2024 23:43:32 -0400 https://www.foxnews.com/media/sean-hannity-left-wing-media-full-lying-dishonesty-hysteria https://www.foxnews.com/media/sean-hannity-left-wing-media-full-lying-dishonesty-hysteria Sean Hannity: The left-wing media is full of lying, dishonesty and hysteria Fox News host Sean Hannity said that former President Trump was clearly not calling for political violence in his recent campaign speech when he used the common term "bloodbath."
Fox News host Sean Hannity said the Democrats cannot run on President Biden's record, so they use out of context quotes to energize his shrinking base. Rice will not be retried in a 2011 shooting that left four people injured, including a 6-year-old girl, following a decision by Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner.
A Philadelphia man won't be retried in a 2011 shooting that injured four people, including a 6-year-old girl, and sent him to prison for more than a decade at age 17, a prosecutor announced Monday.

A judge closed the case against C.J. Rice, now 30, months after a federal judge found the defense lawyer at his 2013 trial deficient and the evidence "slender." Rice had been serving a 30- to 60-year prison term until he was released amid the federal court ruling late last year.

The case was formally dismissed Monday after District Attorney Larry Krasner decided not to retry it. While he said most of the 45 exonerations his office has championed have been more clearcut cases of innocence, he found a new look at the evidence in Rice's case more nuanced.

SEVERELY DECOMPOSED BODY OF UNIDENTIFIED TODDLER FOUND INSIDE DUFFEL BAG IN WEST PHILADELPHIA: POLICE

"The case falls within that 15% or so (of exoneration cases) where we believe it's murky," Krasner said at a press conference where he was joined by defense lawyers who pushed back on that view.

The reversal hinged on a few key points. A surgeon testified that Rice could not have been the person seen running from the scene because Rice had been seriously injured in a shooting three weeks earlier that fractured his pelvis.

Rice was shot on Sept. 3, 2011, in what he described as a case of mistaken identity. His trial lawyer, now deceased, agreed to stipulate that one of the Sept. 25, 2011, shooting victims was a potential suspect in Rice’s shooting — giving prosecutors a motive — even though there was little evidence of that.

"The evidence of (his) guilt was slender. Only one of the four victims was able to identify him and she admitted that the last time she had seen (him) was at least four years before the shooting. No weapon was ever recovered," U.S. Magistrate Judge Carol Sandra Moore Wells wrote in her October report.

Rice left prison in December, but did not attend Monday’s court hearing. His lawyers said during a news conference that the case echoes many wrongful convictions that involve faulty eyewitness identification, ineffective counsel and overreach by prosecutors.

Nilam Sanghvi, legal director of the Pennsylvania Innocence Project, said the crime should have been thoroughly investigated before trial, not years later.

"It takes courage to face the wrongs of the past," she said, while adding "we can never really right them because we can’t restore the years lost to wrongful conviction — here, over a decade of C.J.’s life."
356741fc-e558-50a5-9b29-6f71c890ea4f fnc Fox News fox-news/us/us-regions/northeast/pennsylvania fox-news/topic/associated-press fox-news/us/philadelphia fox-news/us/us-regions/northeast fox-news/politics/state-and-local fox-news/us/crime fox-news/us/mass-shootings fox-news/us article Mon, 18 Mar 2024 21:20:47 -0400 https://www.foxnews.com/us/st-louis-teen-kaylee-gain-unconscious-suffering-fractured-skull-brutal-attack https://www.foxnews.com/us/st-louis-teen-kaylee-gain-unconscious-suffering-fractured-skull-brutal-attack St. Louis teen Kaylee Gain still unconscious, suffering from fractured skull after brutal attack The family of the 16-year-old St. Louis student who was involved in a fight that went viral online has given an update on her injuries through their attorney.
The family of the St. Louis teen who was violently attacked in a viral video shared an update on her condition, saying the road ahead remains long and uncertain.

The video showed Kaylee Gain, 16, having her head repeatedly pounded on the pavement in the March 8 assault near Hazelwood East High School in Spanish Lake, Missouri, just outside St. Louis.

According to family attorney Bryan Kaemmerer, Gain suffered a fractured skull, resulting in life-threatening brain swelling and bleeding.

He said she has not regained consciousness in the week or so since the fight, Fox 2 reported.

MISSOURI AG SAYS JUVENILE SYSTEM MUST BE REFORMED AFTER TEEN ARRESTED FOR SLAMMING GIRL’S HEAD INTO PAVEMENT

The following day, police arrested a 15-year-old girl in connection with the fight.
