The U.S. State Department is now expanding its travel warning across much of Mexico. The State Department says Americans should avoid travel to 14 of 31 Mexican states, the widest travel advisory since Mexico stepped up its drug war in 2006.

Catholics are very upset that their hospitals are not exempt from the HHS requirement to provide contraception. The so called “conscience clause” doesn’t apply to non churches. Well…here is a solution (unless the President’s accommodation solves it): every Catholic hospital has a chapel….so, why not just rename the hospital a Church (one which just so happens to provide medical services. Churches all the time provide other services…eg day care, bake sales, book sales etc…so why not a particularly large first aid station?)

Yes, I know you think that is very silly…..and it gaming the system…..but do you think any President wants to be fighting THAT battle? Do you think he is going to sue over this?

Is the President’s accommodation on the contraception/religion issue going to work? I see a problem….

My FNC colleague Jenna Lee just interviewed HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius about the President’s new idea (his accommodation) about the contraception/religion controversy and I have this thought:

As I understand it, under the President’s new idea, the insurance companies will pay for the contraceptives (not the religious organizations) so that the religious organizations do not have to violate their conscience.

I don’t think so…. I don’t think the insurance companies will REALLY be paying for it. It may appear that the insurance companies are paying for it but I think it will be quickly passed to everyone else in the form of higher premiums.

Jenna said to Secretary Sebelius that “nothing is free” and in essence, why would anyone think the insurance companies would pay for this (they are not THAT magnanimous) and not pass it onto everyone in the form of higher premiums (and thus the conscience clause WOULD be violated but the cost would be buried in higher premiums to everyone.)

HHS Secretary Sebelius said the insurance companies WILL want to do this (and thus not pass the increased cost off to consumers in the form of higher premiums) because it is cheaper in the long run for the insurance companies that contraceptives are used.

I don’t think so….I don’t think the insurance companies are on the same page with the HHS Secretary about who is going to REALLY pay.

Insurance companies are in the business of making money and making it now. If Secretary Sebelius were correct, then insurance companies would be paying for colonoscopies and mammograms since early detection is a huge cost saving.

Maybe I am wrong….what do YOU think?

By the way, if this works, and everyone is satisfied, that is great news! We need problems solved and not consuming us.

   WASHINGTON (AP) — Senior administration officials tell The Associated Press that President Barack Obama on Friday will announce that religious employers will not have to cover birth control for their employees after all. He will demand instead that insurance companies will be the ones ultimately responsible for providing free contraception.
   Obama’s abrupt retreat is an attempt to address concerns from Catholic leaders and end an election-year nightmare for the White House.
   Women will still get guaranteed access to birth control without co-pays or premiums no matter where they work.
   But religious organizations that see contraception as a violation of their faith can refuse to cover it, and insurance companies will then have to do so.
   Senior administration officials confirmed details to the AP on condition of anonymity ahead of an announcement by Obama.
